Description:

This is a CD/DVD and folder catalogizer written in Gambas. It uses sqlite3 server for the database. It can browse inside the ARJ, ACE, TAR, RAR, and ZIP archives, but then it requires additional packages (unrar, unzip, unace, arj) to be installed. The Virtual Compilation feature requires mkisofs package for .ISO creation.

The Virtual Compilation has been rewritten. It should be stable and improved now.

Features:
- Scanning removable devices, partitions and folders
- Scanning inside archives
- Advanced search options
- Advanced search result filtering
- Exporting the results
- Browsing the scanned archive file
- Virtual Compilation. This is an option to create a CD/DVD from the files listed in database in form of k3b project and .ISO file
- Managing the disks and video DVDs, you can add video DVDs from a filelist in .TXT format.
- Managing your customers, to know to whom you've given your disks and when.
- Rating your disks and specifying their genres
- Searching through disk and finding disks given on a specific date
- Added catalogs, which are basically the same things as genres, yet the overview is enhanced.
- You can add your notes to each media added
- You can remove catalog/genre types.
- You can rename the scanned content/ the filenames with double-click
- Enhanced search result filtration with pop-up menus
- You can exclude certain files from being scanned (like Thumbs.db or ReadMe.txt)
- You can search through categories:
On the Catalog tab select categories, go to the Search tab, activate the Only in Disks option, and you can search only inside the category
- Now you can quickly remove unwanted hits from within the search results by a right-click menu.
- Ability to handle multiple disks rating and genre at the same time using the button 'Fx' on the "Register" tab.
- Ability to adjust the reading in delay.
- Select the folder for your Virtual Compilation wherever you want to.
- Save / load your compilations
- You can import a previously saved GamCat file (at first run).
- Robot filter. When you search throughout the database, now you can record all the steps you made during the process of filtration. These steps are 'robots', and you can save and reuse them. You can also export them to an external file, or import them. So you can share your 'robots' with others.
- Volume export. You can select a volume on 'Catalogs' tab and export the content of that volume to an external file, or you can import other volumes. All in all, you can share your volumes with your friends through internet!
- The GUI has been enhanced with many small cliparts.
- An info window for checking the optional dependencies.
- Implemented the genisoimage package for ISO creation.
- Added ability to create/save/ open databases other than the default one
- Ability to import already saved or backuped databases
- Added View filter to the 'Catalogs' tab. It is possible now to search visually through the disk's directory tree, and find hits via patterns, as well as to navigate through the hits.
- Added new icons for commonly used file types.
- Removed some annoyances on 'Register' tab.
- New option added to search filtration: negation (# is the sign for negation in robot-filters)
- Exporting buttons on Search tab moved to pop-up menu
- New feature: you can visually find the hit directly from the Search tab.
- Repaired search: now you can search and find archives
- New feature: you can lock the hit table, so the next search hits will be added to the existing ones.
- Volume erasure button moved to the pop-up menu.
- You can export the volume list and DVD list
NEW FEATURES:
- Reports in various formats about a volume: .TXT and .HTML
- Ability to create a complete website from out of your catalog.
- Fixed search filtration errors

I still need translators.

I have added translations into:
-Hungarian
-Serbian
-Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese (both are works of Nathan Seyeau, great thanks!) - to be completed.

Packages are available for:
-Debian and Ubuntu
-Mandriva, RedHat and Suse

Please post your suggestions, and errors. I'd like to improve GamCat and to fix the errors. The project is approaching its end. For me it works seamlessly, and I see no reason for adding another features, except if some of you have some suggestions. It's still not very nice, but very usable.

Changelog:

For 0.0.41:
The virtual Compilation tab is completely rewritten. It should be more stable and useful. It uses a complicated algorhythm, so some errors are still possible. I need your feedback.

For 0.0.42:
Finally, I found a version of Gambas2 which includes the database drivers for sqlite, so the dependencies are invoked at installation time. Still you have to install the sqlite package manually. I hope you'll enjoy this new release, 'cos I've been coding hard to make it!

For 0.0.43:
This is a finalized version for volume import/export. With the previous version you could export the content of the volume but without the comments, genre/category and rating. Now this is accomplished. I've redesigned the Arhive type selector. Now it works as an expander and you can find a package checker underneath this expander. The colors and buttons are redesigned.

FOR 0.0.44:
Bugfixes around ISO image creation. I've added the missing label to a button

For 0.0.45:
Finally, you can have more separate database files for GamCat.In Knowledge Base you can find out how to handle them.

For 0.0.46:
This release enhances the visual search through the Catalog tab. It's more colorful now, and it's easier to find a certain file visually.

For 0.0.47:
Clearer look. Pop-up menu over buttons.
Search abilities fixed and improved. It's better, than before.

For 0.0.48:
GamCat got new ability. You can generate detailed reports, and publish your catalog as a website to the internet. The look has been improved too. I finally fixed the problems with search filtration.

IMPORTANT (05-01-2010):
Since there are unresolvable dependency differences between different distributions, I've decided to switch off the sqlite driver in dependency list. That means, that you'll have to install any available version of gambas2-gb-db-sqlite package (I saw versions sqlite, sqlite2 and sqlite3 in different distros). Basically all the packages will be sufficient. YOU MUST INSTALL it MANUALLY, I'm sorry!

 Out of Bounds

by junkDawgie on: Jun 28 2009

when adding volumes to the disk catalog, I get an error:

[21] Out of bounds.
FMain.?.0

the application closes immediately after the error msg is acknowledged. Restarting the application shows the volume was added to the catalog successfully.

suggestions?

Please try to re-add the questioned volume with no archive search.
It is likely some archive does the crash.
The guilty is upon the different kinds of character encoding used by Windows and Linux. I've encountered similar errors on my old volumes, which were made under Windows. Anyway, it won't do any harm to your database, just it wont list all the contents of an archive

 download?

by brserek on: Dec 31 2009

All you offer to download is Debian package, Unace for Mandriva (this is very strange) and translation files. I would really like to try this application, but I'm Fedora user...

I suggest you to try the unace provided with the Fedora.I hope it will work for you. I've never tested GamCat on Fedora, only with Ubuntu, Debian and Mandriva, but hopefully you can use the Mandriva's or openSuse's version. I'm really curious about it's usability. Please post me your experiences, if you're willing!

I've tested GamCat on Fedora 12 LiveCD and it works. Still, this was a live version, and I had some troubles with font sizes.

Tried to install rpm, but there are unresolved dependency: gambas2-gb-db-sqlite2. I've found only gambas2-gb-db-sqlite3 in repositories, but it won't work.
I've just downloaded sources and will try to compile later.

Please download the package again. I've uploaded the version with no gambas2-gb-db-sqlite dependency just in this afternoon. Hopefully you'll manage to install it. Read the notes.

Now package simply installs. But there's another problem. After starting it tells me to put in discs in drives to recognize them. And I've tried everything: CDs, DVDs, automounting, manual mounting, but nothing works.

Can you post me the content of your /etc/mtab file?

As I told you, I never tested it on Fedora.

A better idea:

see where are mounted your DVD and CD drives, e.g.
/dev/dvd
/dev/cd

or similar.

Create a config file inside your /home/your/.GamCat folder, and put the corresponding lines inside the config file, and save it. Restart GamCat

Wait until monday, I'll upload a zipped directory structure, with an empty database, so you'll be able to extract into your home folder, and to skip the installation's misery, oh beauties of Linux!

Please download the 'First aid kit',
extract to your home folder, and go into ~/.GamCat folder of your home folder.
There is a config.txt file in it.
Open it, and replace the lines with the ones you can find in /etc/mtab.
(you can do it as regular user with command:
kate /etc/mtab )
Search for lines similar to

/dev/sr1 /media/cdrom0 iso9660 ro,nosuid,nodev,utf8,user=minthaka 0 0

You only need the
/dev/sr1 part to be put into the config.txt.

Save the file, and start Gamcat.
hopefully that helps.

Sorry for not answering, but I'm very busy these days. I've just updated to version 0.45 and downloaded First Aid Kit. No time to do some testing, but program starts and I'm able to add discs to database.
I've got no /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 in my mtab. Those are actual devices, and disks are automounting, but no entries in mtab - to complicated for me :)
Thanks for help.
