Description:

The project provides a ready-to-use interface for the julius speech recognition engine. It integrates into X11 and Windows.

simon can import dictionaries, grammar structures and compile a language model with the help of the HTK toolkit of the university of cambridge.

With the recognition results it can type texts, simulate shortcut sequences, start programs control your mouse and more.

simon comes with a complete manual describing the system. This manual and setup instructions are also available from our wiki: http://simon-listens.org/wiki

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need help!

Changelog:

0.2:
Fixed the remaining known issues and added the manual.

0.2 rc1:

We've done a _lot_ of testing. Basically we tested every feature as well as we could and came up with a lot of bugs.
Well those are all fixed now :)

There are two issues left which are sadly quite bad: One crashes simon and one causes the recognition to stop without any error or warning what so ever. Both only get triggered when re-initializing the recognition and are related to Juliuslib. I hope to get that fixed soon.

But all in all, simon should be quite stable and ready for some productive use!

0.2-beta-3:

Introducing three new command plug-ins:
* List
A list of other simon commands; The user selects one of the commands using numbers 1-9; If there are more than 8 commands in the list, the list only goes from 1-8 and 0 and 9 are can be used for scrolling (0: up; 9: down).

* Composite
Combines other simon commands in one "Macro". The user can even define delays between the invocation of two sub-commands.

* Input Numbers
A calculator-like front-end to input long numbers with ease.

Also, the desktop-grid can now be completely controlled by voice.

The recording widget now displays the current "loudness" of the input while recording. This should help to weed out not working / badly configured microphones.

Updated Julius to the current SVN versions with minimal modifications.

Bug-Fixing all around - especially related to sound and recognition.

0.2-beta-2:

Fixed various bugs related to the grammar which caused it to not get saved most of the time. It is now again possible to add multiple words at once without losing samples. All input files to the importing functions (dictionary, texts, etc.) are now checked if they exist before the importing begins. simon now compiles also on Ubuntu Hardy Heron (KDE 4.0) Removed KDE-Includes when building julius (a lot of warnings due to strict compiler flags) All libraries are now installed correctly.

0.2-beta-1:

Bugfixing all around.
Fixed a whole lot of libjulius / sent related issues regarding stopping / starting of the sound-stream.
Fixing the Windows Version.
Introducing CPack support for quick package building.

0.2-alpha-1:

Porting to KDE 4
Removed Juliusd in favor of simond:
* Network audio streaming
* Recognition and model compilation on server
* No processor intensive calculations on the client (opens the door to development of solutions for embedded devices, etc.)
Revised and greatly improved command plugin architecture
* Individual triggers per plugin
* Runtime module loading / unloading (even the configuration of the modules)
Introduction of ksimond - a frontend to the simond recognition server
And much, much more...

0.1-alpha-2.1:

A lot of compatibility fixes.

0.1-alpha-2:

Too many changes to count - here the most important ones:

Fixed about a gazillion bugs.
Streamlined the interface.
The command-system has been completely rewritten.
A few performance optimizations.
Introduced a structured build-system.
Switched to portaudio backend for more compatibility.
Did I mention fixing bugs? Lots of them...

0.1-alpha-1:
Initial release

 SUSE 64 bit packages

by fpuelz on: Aug 23 2009

Hi, the link to the 64-bit suse package is pointing to a .deb-file. But there's also an rpm, that I'm currently downloading. So please correct the link :) Thanks!

 configure blank

by andrius on: Sep 8 2009

on windows, the configure screen is blank:
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/261/ksimon.jpg
any clue?

Also, is it possible to provide a kde-installer package? that's because it looks like I have two kde environments, one for kde other for simon..

 Re: configure blank

by bedahr on: Sep 15 2009

That would be a problem introduced because of your two different environments.

There is no official installer package (because there are just too few users that would profit from that) for simon but you could install the SVN version and build against "your" KDE version.

For a temporary fix just call kbuildsycoca4.exe in simons environment before you start simon / ksimond.

Peter

 Freezing

Hello,

I'm getting a problem with simon freezing shortly after connecting. This is what I got from the command line, after starting Akregator from a list I created:

I'm using Kubuntu Jaunty 64 with KDE 4.3.1.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

 Re: Freezing

This is probably due to the broken *buntu sound stack. Please update to a newer portaudio version (will be the default for karmic):
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/libportaudio2

If you need the development files:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/portaudio19-dev

Greetings,
Peter

 Re: Re: Re: Freezing

Yes this is exactly the output produced by a sound problem. Ignore the painter warnings these are because of your style (bespin, right?).

So you updated your portaudio package now. Do you use pulseaudio?

In short what that output means is:
simon: Ok now I am recording, fine. I am closing the handle now, everything ok. Now I need to open it again: Please give me my handle back, operating system.
Operating system: ...
simon: Hey, OS?
OS: I am not talking to you anymore.

Strangly this only happens on *buntu systems (ok I didn't test debian but all the other distros are alright). Updating portaudio and uninstalling pulseaudio both help but don't really resolve the issue.

Greetings,
Peter

Hello, Peter

Portaudio updated, no pulseaudio - it never worked for me (and yes, bespin).

But why is simon freezing when it finds this problem?

In any case I'll try installing it on another system. Sometime ago I tried it on Mandriva, I can't remember why it didn't work.

Many thanks for your support!

simon doesn't freeze - portaudio does.

Haven't tested it on Mandriva personally but haven't heard from any problems either so I guess thats good.

Peter

**************************************************

HTK is now ready to be built.

Type "make all" to build the HTK libraries
and tools.

Then "make install" to install them.

The tools will be installed in /usr/local/bin

Build notes: Language Modelling tools will be
built. HDecode will not be built. You can build
it manually later by running 'make hdecode
install-hdecode'

Re: compiling htk on opensuse 11.2

 by k8oylos on: Nov 25 2009

well, i found the solution to this one:
I had not installed libX11-devel. Did it easily through yast in suse.
Now i get, however another error

As the server compiled the model the following error occured:
Could not generate HMM13.

Please check the path to HHEd (/usr/local/bin/HHEd).

I can see a file root/usr/local/bin/HHEd
what does this error mean?

Hello!

You should post the full output log (click on details when the error is displayed).

But please use a past service like pastebin.com.

Greetings,
Peter

Very strange. Where did the HTML entities come from? Are they in the original message?

Could you please also past your lexicon? (~/.kde/share/apps/simon/model/lexicon)

You might have some encoding issue...

What shadow dictionary are you using?

Greetings,
Peter

if you mean the ΓΙΆΝΝΗΣ
it's not html, it's greek letters, seems that pastebin doesn't get them.

my lexicon file is here
http://pastebin.com/f9f69cff
but it also looks the same (the part with greek words). i 'll try to paste it here to see if it displays correctly.

I don't know where i can see the encoding for the file, but if i open it with kwrite file displays fine and if i click save as kwrite selects utf-8 as encoding.
Also when i tried to load training files in simon, in order to make the file display correctly, i used utf-8 in the file insertion dialog

SENT-END [] sil
SENT-START [] sil

oh, and shadow lexicon is the voxforge english (not useful for greek, but as the program didn't seem to build a model without a shadow lexicon installed, i just put one)

Ok this is going to be problematic.

You should be able to sneek those symbols through HTK in the description of words but you can not use them in your phonetic description. It looks like you really transcribed the words (I don't speak greek) instead of just writing them down "as they sound" (which would produce very poor results) but you can't use a greek phonetic alphabet.

How did create the pronunciations?

If you are sure it is alright, try substituting the signs with ascii characters (no numbers!).

For example:
γ=y, ι=l, α=a, etc.
Phonemes need to be separated by spaces!

So your transcription will look something like this:
ΓΙΆΝΝΗΣ [Γιάννης] y l a v l c

If you run out of characters, remember that you can use phonemes consisting of more than one character: "al" and even "weirdcwithadash" would be a proper phoneme name.

Greetings,
Peter

Could SIMON run on Nokia N900

by gadgety on: Dec 28 2009

Hi Peter,

Could the SIMON software run on Nokia's pocketable computer, the Debian based maemo OS N900? It has a 32-bit TI OMAP 3430: ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz. If it could SIMON would get a lot of users.

Thanks!

Hi!

I already replied at sourceforge but I'll copy my response here too:

Probably. There are KDE libraries for N900 so it should be quite easy.

However, I don't know about portaudio... Would be very interested to hear the results if you'd try, tough.

Greetings, Peter.
